Interactive Multi-User Observatory Experience

Why

teamLab was invited to propose an interactive experience to complement observatory telescopes at landmark towers. We aimed to conceptualize a modernized, engaging experience using multi-touch panels to create an immersive, exploratory view that redefines how visitors interact with the cityscape.

What

A multi-touch digital signage system with immersive 360-degree time-lapse views captured from a high-definition camera at 350 meters, this installation offers panoramic perspectives of Tokyo from sunrise to sunset, overlaid with labels for key landmarks, transportation routes, and parks.

How

Our approach emphasized the contrast between the traditional binocular’s private, isolated experience and the shared, collaborative experience provided by a large touch panel. The design allows multiple users to explore landmarks together, interact with layered information, and access different views of Tokyo in real-time, fostering a sense of shared discovery.

Product overview

The Interactive Multi-User Observatory Experience, developed by teamLab, reimagines the classic observatory experience by transforming it into an interactive, multi-user platform. Installed at the Fields Headquarters, this project complements traditional telescopes by offering a panoramic, touch-based exploration of Tokyo’s skyline. Using high-definition, 360-degree time-lapse views captured throughout the year, the system allows visitors to discover Tokyo’s landmarks in real time. By combining large touch displays with interactive layers of information, teamLab sought to create a shared, immersive experience that invites multiple users to engage with the cityscape together, viewing different times of day, seasons, and historic data in an intuitive and modern way.
